December Work

Externally, the house doesn't look a whole lot different than Thanksgiving. There's now more siding, and the roof has shingles. Other exciting things have been happening though, like insulation and soundproofing.

As I've said earlier, all the bedrooms are downstairs. They have now been (mostly) soundproofed.

And here's the insulation. I happened to be home when some of this was done, as was surprised to see the trailer that this arrived in. It advertised the spray-on insulation as bio-based (soy of all things). So if you are allergic to soy, please let us know before you come visit the house.

I also got to watch some of this soy based insulation being applied. When sprayed out, it looks like someone has thoroughly sneezed on the wall. The mucuidal result stays liquid for a second or so, and then starts growing. It expands to a couple dozen times its initial size, and dries. Once this is finished, the wall (or floor, or roof, etc) is now insulated. It also looks like some large insect has come and laid eggs all over the inside of the wall (or floor, or roof...).

I'm curious to see how well the insulation works over the weekend. Last weekend was rather brisk, with the house being marginally warmer than the outdoors. This weekend promises to be similarly brisk. If the insulation, windows, etc all work, the house should now be substantially warmer than the outside. And since HVAC doesn't get installed for a week or so, this is the best chance I'll have to see how warm it gets without help.

In other fun news, I recently got hooked on "The Mesopotamians" by They Might Be Giants. Anyone care to identify the groups that influenced it?

  1. It's fun watching the progress of your house. Reminds me of Idaho, just before you were born, when we were building a house. Only you get to share your pictures more easily.
