Phone company frustrations

I find that my regard for rural phone companies has reached new depths. I've been helping an elderly couple in the area go through the arduous task of upgrading from dial-up to DSL, and the phone company hasn't been helping. I can understand that it's a rural company, and they can't afford techs that know what they're talking about, but the sheer level of apathetic "it's friday afternoon, and you want me to WORK?" attitude of their support staff astounded me.

In other news, I have today off because I worked last night. On the plus side, I get free time. On the minus side, my sleep schedule is so off it's hilarious.

We also spent about an hour today walking around with a Missouri Dept. of Wildlife guy (name has been changed to protect the excellent). He walked around with us, gave us recommendations on what to do about various pests (both flora and fauna), and suggestions on how to block road noise, erosion, and such. And the state provides this for $0.00. Free gratis. We found out about this because Hannah went to a Forestry Management class in the next county north (nothing happens in this county). It cost a very affordable $10 for 5 evenings of instruction and a hand's on morning at one of the instructor's properties.

I must say living near the Arkansas / Missouri border has a lot more attractions than I would have thought as a teenager. Between the two of us, we've found pottery classes, horsemanship classes, fiddle instructors, martial arts classes, forestry management courses, D&D groups, knife/weapon making gurus... the list goes on.
